The Teenage Foster Care program is about finding, matching and supporting foster carers with homeless teenagers.
The program matches young people (male and female 12-18 years) with Christian people, whether they are single people, couples or families. Either the young person comes to live in the Christian home, or a home is provided where both the caregiver and the young person create a home.
We aim not only to provide young people with practical needs, housing and food but also to have a sense of family.
The goals are to develop a relationship with the young people and through that to teach them independent living skills, support them personally and encourage them spiritually, sharing God's love with them.
We receive referrals from various sources including Department of Human Services (State Department) and the community.
Once a young person is considered appropriate for a placement, YFC match the young person with a suitable caregiver. They then have an opportunity to meet and if both parties are satisfied, the placement begins.
Trained YFC workers provide ongoing support to the young person and the carer throughout the placement.
Training and reimbursement are provided.
Foster caring is perhaps the most challenging and rewarding way to minister to young people.
Currently, there is a huge shortage of caregivers and there not enough homes available for the young people in Melbourne needing a home. YFC needs Christian caregivers today to open their homes or live in a home provided and be involved in the Teenage Foster Care program.
